VAF-60D Optical Anti-Aliasing Filter: Installation

(See Also: Removal)

The VAF-60D installs easily into your camera in just a few seconds.  Before beginning, please note:

Cleaning  If you accidentally touch the filter's coated optical surfaces, fingerprints can be easily wiped away using a just a single drop of alcohol on a piece of soft cotton cloth.  Most alcohol-based lens cleaners can be used as well.  As with any optics, avoid vigorous scrubbing, and be careful not to drag abrasive particles across the surface.

Camera OFF while Mounting / Dismounting Lens  If certain older EF lenses are removed from the 60D while it is turned on, their iris setting may be misread by the camera when they are reinstalled.  (This issue is unrelated to the VAF-60D, and can happen even if the VAF-60D isn't being used.)  The power on/off instructions included below will ensure that this doesn't happen.  If you inadvertently remove a lens with the camera on and cause this to occur, the solution is just to manually adjust the camera iris control to fully open the lens, and then to re-adjust it to your desired f-stop.

Please note that the photos below illustrate the Canon 7D and the VAF-7D; however the installation process for the 60D/VAF-60D is the same.

  • Remove the VAF-60D from its container and protective wrapping, holding it by its corners and edges. If necessary, any dust can be easily removed using a "canned air" duster.
  • The VAF-60D is shipped with a small pair of pointed tweezers, that make it very easy to manipulate the filter without contaminating it with fingerprints.  Insert the tips of the tweezers into the two holes on the flat, front face of the filter, as shown.

  • Hold the camera vertically during the following steps.  This will prevent any possibility of a dropped object striking the exposed image sensor.
  • Turn the camera OFF, remove its lens, and turn the camera back ON.  Press the camera's Live View button to raise its reflex mirror.

  • Lay the top edge of the VAF-60D against the bottom edge of the raised reflex mirror.
  • The tabs at the top corners of the VAF-60D will fit naturally into the beveled sides of the reflex mirror cavity.

  • Press gently upwards against the reflex mirror. The foam cushion above the reflex mirror will compress slightly.
  • Press the bottom of the VAF-60D carefully inwards, snapping it gently into place in the bottom of the mirror cavity.
  • Once the VAF-60D is properly seated, gently rock the tweezers to remove them.

  • Now, before mounting a lens on the camera, look carefully to make sure the VAF-60D is properly seated within the reflex mirror cavity.
  • The beveled tabs at the top corners of the VAF-60D will fit neatly against the beveled sides of the mirror cavity.
  • The front faces of the pastic parts of the VAF-60D, will fit flush with the surrounding plastic of the camera body within the lens flange.

  • Likewise, the bottom corner tabs of the VAF-60D will fit neatly between the beveled sides of the mirror cavity, seating flush with the surrounding plastic of the camera body.
  • Turn the camera OFF, reinstall the lens, and turn the camera back ON.
  • Go and use your 60D as usual to shoot some great video!
